Pico laser vs Q-switched, in ordinary Singapore English

Two pigment lasers, two speeds of pulse, one city that loves both names. What patients usually hear, what downtime looks like, and what neither machine can promise.

Pico is a prefix that ate a decade of advertisements. Q-switched is the older cousin still sitting in half the rooms. Both are lasers that talk to pigment. Neither is a personality.

The successor clinic to the old skinaesthetics.sg site still lists pico as a flagship. So does every corridor in Orchard. A reader needs a way to hear the pitch without buying it.

What the names mean

A Q-switched laser delivers a very short pulse — nanoseconds — that shatters pigment particles. A picosecond laser delivers a still shorter pulse. The brochure language is “more photoacoustic, less heat.” The practical language is: different machines, different wavelengths, different operators, and a city that uses “pico” the way it once used “carbon peel.”

Pico is a category. It is not one device. If a consultant cannot say which wavelength they mean for your mark, they are selling a syllable.

What they are commonly discussed for

Sun spots and freckles. Some PIH. Some tattoo ink. Toning passes for a more even look. Mild texture, in fractional pico modes. Melasma — cautiously, and not as a first religion; see pigmentation types.

What they are not: a treatment for a tethered rolling scar, a substitute for sunscreen, or a lunch-hour rewrite of a life in the sun.

Downtime, in days people actually live

Toning: redness like a mild sunburn, often hours. Targeted pigment: spots may look darker for a few days, then flake. Fractional modes: a sandpapery week for some faces. Makeup, if you wear it, may be a next-day conversation or a next-week one. If you have a dinner on Saturday, say so on Monday. Read aftercare as if it were part of the invoice.

Sessions and the boredom of collagen

People are commonly told three to six sessions, a few weeks apart, more for stubborn pigment, fewer for a discrete lentigo. Melasma plans, when laser is used at all, are often slower and humbler. Anyone who writes “ten days to clear skin” on a window is writing fiction.

Cost bands you will hear

Q-switched toning is often cheaper per session than pico. Pico toning and fractional pico sit higher. Packages blur the arithmetic. Ask for the per-session number and the likely count. Our cost map exists so the first figure you hear is not sacred.

Asian skin is the default here

Heat plus melanin is how you get a new brown patch that outlasts the old one. Conservative fluence, time between sessions, and a refusal to treat a face that is about to sit on a beach — these are not timid. They are local.

If a room does not mention PIH until you mention it, you are the safety officer.

Questions that cut the demo short

Which type of pigment do you think this is? Why this laser and not the other? What wavelength? What would make you stop? Who fires it — a doctor whose name I can search? What does a poor outcome look like?

Then go home and see whether the answers still sound like English.

What “toning” is, when the word is not a spa

Toning, in laser speech, is usually a low-fluence pass over a wider area, aimed at a more even look rather than at a single stamp. It can be Q-switched or pico. It can also be a way to sell a package of ten for a face that needed a diagnosis and a sunscreen.

Ask what they are toning toward. Ask how they will know it worked. Ask whether your melasma is the sort that toning has been reported to mottled when overused. “More sessions are always better” is not a protocol. It is a calendar.

Tattoos, which are a different contract

Both families of laser are used on ink. Ink is not a freckle. Colours behave differently. Scarring and ghosting are part of the adult conversation. Do not let a “pigment package” wander onto a tattoo because the machine was already on.

How to sit in the chair without performing

Take off the makeup. Say if you have a tan or a holiday in ten days. Say if a previous laser left you darker. Say if you are on a photosensitising medicine. Then let them mark a map. If they will not map, they are not planning.

Afterwards, do not test the result under a phone flash in the taxi. Wait for the week. Wait for the flake. Wait for the photograph in the same bathroom. The flash will lie and you will send an angry message that a good room would have pre-empted with a sentence about darkening.

Holidays, races and other UV appointments

A marathon, a boat, a Bali week — say these before they fire. The polite delay is cheaper than a brown map. If you already have the holiday, keep the money and go. The laser will still be here. Your pigment will remember the holiday either way; do not give it two stories at once.

Who should not be in the chair

A tan. An infection. A face that is already peeling from a home acid. A person who cannot do aftercare this month. A person whose mark has changed in a way that needs a dermatoscope, not a toning pass. Refusal is a skill. Prefer rooms that have it.

A glossary for the consent form

Fluence means how hard the pulse hits. Wavelength means which colour of light. Spot size means the width of the aim. Endpoint means what they want to see on the skin before they stop. If a form has none of these and only a brand, ask for the medical one. You are signing a physics, not a lifestyle.

Test spots, which are not a delay tactic

A small patch first is how careful rooms admit that your skin is not a brochure. Ask for one. Ask when they will judge it. Ask what would make them change the setting or stop. If they skip the patch because you are “in a hurry,” you are the one who will own the mark.

Pigment lasers love confidence. Your job is to slow the sentence down until it includes your sunscreen habits, your next island weekend, and the medicine you started last month. Those are not footnotes. They are the treatment.

Compare pico and Q-switched as tools, not as personalities. The expensive syllable is not a moral upgrade. The plan is the upgrade — or it is not, and you should hear that in ordinary words.

Questions people ask

How much does pico laser cost in Singapore?
Published clinic menus in recent years often sit roughly between the mid-hundreds and about a thousand dollars a session depending on mode and area. That is an observed band, not a quote.
What is the downtime after pico laser?
Many people are told to expect redness for hours to a day or two, temporary darkening of spots, then light flaking. Individual skin disagrees.
Is pico always better than Q-switched?
Pico is newer marketing and often gentler in the brochure. Q-switched remains widely used for some pigment and for toning. Better is a diagnosis word, not a brand word.
