Chemical peels in Singapore — strength, downtime, climate

Acids are not a personality, and a tropical city is not a skiing holiday. How to hear a peel menu without booking a burn.

A peel is an acid, a time, and a face that has to commute home through heat. In winter cities the story includes a scarf. Here the story includes a bus stop.

Clinic menus love the word “refresh.” What they mean is a controlled injury to the upper skin so it sheds and, with luck, looks more even. The control is the whole job.

Superficial, medium, and the words in between

Glycolic, lactic, mandelic, salicylic — these are the lunchtime names, the ones that sting and flake a little and let many people go back to email. TCA at higher strengths, and combination peels, are a different week: swelling, brown sheets of skin, a social life that becomes a hat.

If a consultant says “medical peel” without a strength, they have said a mood. Ask for the acid and the percentage the way you would ask for a dose.

What peels are asked to do

Clogged pores and a rough surface. Some epidermal pigment. The look of dullness that the old site called dry facial skin. Very little, honestly, for a deep ice-pick scar.

Peels are sometimes cheaper per visit than a laser and need more visits. That is not a virtue. It is arithmetic. See costs.

Climate is not a footnote

A peel thins the roof. The Singapore sun does not care that you have a certificate. Heat can inflame. Sweat can sting. A week of hawker centres and no hat is how a light peel becomes a PIH story.

If you cannot do aftercare this month — outdoor wedding, field work, a child who will not wear a pram shade — book a different month. The acid will still be there.

Who should slow down

People who have just used isotretinoin, who pick, who form keloids, who have a tan they are proud of, who are still breaking out in open sores, who are pregnant and were not asked. People whose “sensitive skin” is an untreated eczema. People who want a peel and a laser in the same fortnight because a package said so.

A sensible conversation

What acid, what strength, what depth? What will I look like on day three? What should I stop beforehand — retinoids, other acids, fragrance? If I tan easily, why this peel? Who applies it? What is the plan if I pigment?

Then compare that answer with a laser conversation. Sometimes the peel is the quieter tool. Sometimes it is a prelude. Sometimes it is a sale.

Preparing the fortnight before

Many rooms will ask you to stop retinoids and other acids for a few days, to arrive without makeup, and to have been wearing sunscreen like a person who means it. If you arrive with a tan you are proud of, expect a postpone. A postpone is a kindness.

Tell them about cold sores if you get them. Some peels around the mouth wake a virus. Tell them about a flight. Cabin air plus a peel is a dry opera.

Day two and day four, which are the honest days

Day one you may look merely pink. Day two you may look like you chose a bad holiday. Day four, on a medium peel, you may be shedding in sheets you were told not to pull. Work from home if you can. If you cannot, a hat and a colleague who has been warned are cheaper than a corrective pigment.

Do not “help” the peel with a scrub. Do not steam your face over a soup pot to speed it. Time is the only accelerator that does not cost colour.

Peels versus lasers, when both are offered

A peel can be the quieter first step for surface roughness and some epidermal colour. A laser can be more targeted for a discrete lentigo. A room that always prefers the tool they have paid off is a room you can predict. Ask them to justify the tool with a type of problem, not with a monthly target.

How a peel is chosen when the room is careful

They will name the acid, the strength, the layers, the endpoint they will look for on the skin — frost or not, pink or not. They will ask about cold sores, isotretinoin, pregnancy, and the week you have. They will stop if the skin says stop. If they cannot describe the endpoint, they are pouring, not practising.

Ask whether this peel is for colour, for clog, or for the feeling of having done something. The third is a spa. Price it as a spa.

The week after, in this air

Sweat will find the peel. Hats will find the peel. A chili dinner will find the peel. Plan kinder food and kinder sun. If you must cook, use a fan and a distance. If you must walk, use the covered way even when it is longer. The long way is the treatment.

Medium peels and the social lie

“You can work through it” is a sentence that belongs to a person whose work is a screen at home. A teacher, a waiter, a barrister — they cannot work through a sheet of brown skin. Name the job. Ask for a peel that matches the job or a week that matches the peel. Anything else is someone else’s courage.

Cold sores, which are not a footnote

If you get them, say so twice. Some rooms will pre-treat. Some will avoid the mouth. Some will peel anyway and you will have a week that is not about glow. This is ordinary medicine. It belongs on the form before the acid, not in a panic at midnight.

Home peels, which are a different risk

A bottle from a live video is not a clinic TCA. Strengths lie. Hands slip. This climate then writes PIH on the result. If you want a peel, buy the hour that includes a person who will stop. If you want a glow, buy sleep. The kitchen is for food.

Makeup, work, and the peel that has to hide

A peel that cannot be explained to a manager is a peel you should schedule beside leave, not beside a presentation. This city works in open offices and lunch queues. Pink that looks “fresh” in a brochure looks like a weekend story you did not mean to tell. Ask for the social downtime in days, then add one, then look at your calendar honestly.

If you wear a uniform, a helmet, or a mask for work, say so before the acid. Occlusion and sweat change the week. A room that shrugs at your job is a room that has not imagined your Tuesday.

Do not stack a new retinoid, a new vitamin C, or a “just a facial” on top of a peel because a video said the cocktail is advanced. Advanced, in this climate, often means a mark you will explain for a month.

Questions people ask

How much does a chemical peel cost in Singapore?
Light clinic peels are often listed from about a hundred to a few hundred dollars. Deeper or combined work costs more. Ranges, not a fee list.
Can I peel if I have melasma?
Sometimes a very light peel is discussed as part of a larger plan. Aggressive peeling of melasma in this climate is a well-known way to buy PIH.
How long before I can go outside?
You can walk outside the same day with strict sun sense. You should not treat the sun as a reward for being brave.
