Post-inflammatory marks on Asian and melanin-rich skin
The brown souvenir after acne, a peel or a bug bite is common in this city and easy to treat like a scar. It is colour, and it is patient.

A pimple goes. A brown stamp stays. In a city where most faces carry more melanin than a European textbook planned for, that stamp is ordinary. It is also the reason a “quick laser” after a holiday peel becomes a longer story.
PIH — post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation — is the skin’s memory of insult. Acne, eczema, a burn from an acid, a mosquito, a poorly timed device. The memory is colour.
PIH is not melasma and not a dent
Melasma is usually symmetrical and hormonally nosy. A scar is a change in the surface. PIH is a flat mark where something happened. People mix all three because phones flatten depth.
If you press gently and the colour stays, you are probably not looking at a passing flush. If the surface dips, you may have both a mark and a scar. Sequence matters. Colour first is a common conservative idea, because heating a dent in pigment-prone skin can leave a new stamp around the old one.
Why this skin, this city
Melanin-rich skin is good at making melanin. Inflammation is a rumoured invitation. Ultraviolet light, visible light and heat — the Singapore trinity — keep the invitation open. A mark that might fade on a cloudy autumn elsewhere sits here under a lunchtime walk and a glass office.
This is also why “no downtime” devices still come with a pigment conversation. Downtime, in the brochure, means redness you can see at dinner. Downtime, in this skin, can mean a brown week that arrives later.
What careful plans usually sound like
Stop the insult. If acne is still running, treat that; see teen and adult acne. Sun every day, including the kind of tinted sunscreen that takes visible light seriously. Time. Then, if a doctor agrees, topicals that are legal and supervised — some brightening agents in Singapore are prescription-only for a reason — and only later a device.
Pico and Q-switched conversations are common. So are peels that are too ambitious. The Dermatological Society of Singapore notes that lasers are a poor first thought for marks that will fade and for pigment that rebounds. That sentence should live on more homepages.
What not to do in the bathroom
Pick. Lemon. A paste from a forum. A “peel” bought because the bottle looked clinical. Stacking acids the week after a clinic peel. Booking a second device because the first week looked darker — darkening before flake is a story people already know if they were warned, and a panic if they were not.
Questions worth the air-conditioning
Is this PIH, melasma, a scar, or a mark you want to look at medically first? What will you not switch on this month? If I get darker before I get lighter, is that expected? How do we stop this becoming the next PIH?
Colour is slow. Singapore is bright. The plan that respects both will look boring in a sales meeting and adult in a year.
The darkening that is expected, and the darkening that is not
After some lasers and peels, treated spots look worse before they flake. That sentence should be on the consent form. A new stamp in a place that was not treated, or a spreading duskiness, is a different sentence — call.
People panic on day three and book a second device. That panic is how sequels get written. Sit in shade. Take the photograph in the same light. Send it to the doctor named on the form.
Cosmetics and the pause
Concealer is allowed when the surface is intact and the clinic said so. Cheap, dirty applicators are not. A “colour corrector” that is really an irritant is how a mark gains a friend. If you must cover, use a clean tool and take it off as if the aftercare sheet were watching.
Time as a treatment
A PIH mark that is three weeks old and a mark that is three years old are not the same conversation. The new one may still be fading. The old one may be a scar’s neighbour. Dates, again, are diagnostic. So is “I picked it,” which you should say without theatre. Doctors have heard it.
If a child or a teenager is the patient, the first door is still acne care, not a pigment package. See the climate essay on teen and adult acne. Their calendar includes school photographs and a lower tolerance for a brown month. That does not justify a heroic laser. It justifies patience explained in advance.
Children, acne and the long brown month
A mark on a teenager’s cheek can last a school term. That is cruel and still not a reason for a heroic laser. Medicine for the acne, sunscreen for the term, time for the colour. If a parent is being sold a package because a class photograph is coming, the photograph will include a new injury if you hurry.
Makeup that does not become a second insult
Clean sponges. A concealer you remove at night. No lemon, no toothpaste, no “spot cream” from a live video. If a product stings a mark, it is not helping the mark. It is recruiting a neighbour.
A photograph protocol you can keep
Same bathroom, same hour, no makeup, once a week, four weeks. Do not use a beauty filter. Do not change the bulb. If the mark is fading, you will see it. If it is not, you have a file for a doctor that is better than a mood. This protocol is also how you stop buying a new brightening bottle every Friday.
The second injury, which is optional
A peel on a fresh PIH, a pick on a fresh PIH, a holiday on a fresh PIH — these are choices. The mark does not require them. If a consultant is bored by waiting, find a less bored consultant. Time is not a lack of technology. It is how this skin avoids a sequel.
Time, which is the treatment people skip
PIH often fades if you stop adding injury and start adding shade. That sentence is boring, which is why it loses to a laser advert. Give boredom a calendar: eight to twelve weeks of the same sunscreen, no new acids, no picking, one photograph a fortnight. Then decide whether a clinic is still the next step.
If a room wants to treat the brown before they have heard how the pink got there — the acne, the wax, the peel, the habit — they are treating a souvenir. Souvenirs recur when the holiday continues.
Ask what they will refuse. A good answer names a device, a week, or a skin that is still inflamed. A poor answer names a package. You can buy a package later. You cannot un-buy a second mark.

Questions people ask
- Is PIH a scar?
- No. It is leftover colour on skin that is otherwise level. Scars change the surface. The two can sit together, which is why naming matters.
- How long does PIH last?
- Weeks to many months. Sun and further irritation make it linger. Anyone promising a two-week disappearance is selling a calendar, not a face.
- Should I laser it immediately?
- Not while the skin is still inflamed, and not before someone has said it is not melasma or a mark that needs a medical look.
