Questions to ask at a first aesthetic consultation
A list you can take into a room that would rather show you a tablet. Diagnosis, downtime, money, the person holding the device — and the pause after.

A first consultation is where the relationship either becomes clinical or becomes retail. You can help it choose.
Print this if you must. You will not look foolish. You will look like someone who has read how to choose a clinic.
About what they see
What do you think this is — in a sentence I can repeat? Is it one problem or several? For brown marks: which pigment? For dents: which scar? Would you treat the colour and the texture in the same hour? What would you not do?
If they cannot say “I do not know yet,” they are not examining. They are reciting.
About you
Which medicines, supplements, creams and previous devices matter here? What happens if I am pregnant, trying, or breastfeeding? I scar thickly / I pigment easily / I have eczema / I take isotretinoin — how does that change the menu? I have a wedding or a hearing on this date.
A room that does not want this paragraph does not want your face. It wants your package.
About the work
Which device or product, by name? Why this and not the other laser or a peel? How many sessions before we admit it failed? Who performs it — the name on the SMC register? What does a complication look like, and whom do I call at 10pm?
About money
What is the price per session, not only the package? What is included — numbing, reviews, a tube of something? What is the refund or pause policy if my skin says no after session two? See cost bands so you have a weather report.
About the week after
What will I look like on day two? Can I train, fly, sit in a hawker centre, wear makeup? What does aftercare actually require in this climate?
The last question
May I have this plan in writing, and may I think overnight?
If that sentence sours the room, the room has done you a favour.
How to start the hour so it cannot become a demo
Sit down and say, before the tablet, “I want to understand what you see and what you would not do. I am not buying a package today.” Then ask the first diagnosis question. The room will either relax or it will try to hurry you. Both are information.
If a consultant remains after the doctor leaves, treat their add-on as optional. Ask them to write it down separately from the clinical plan.
Notes you can take without looking hostile
Device or product name. Session range. Per-session price. Expiry. After-hours number. Who performs. What “success” will look like in a photograph. What would make them stop. You can type this on a phone. You can write it on the back of their brochure. People who object to notes object to records.
After you leave
Do not sign in the taxi. Search the doctor. Read one primary page — DSS, MOH, SMC — related to the tool. Sleep. If the plan still sounds like English in the morning, you can return. If it sounds like a dream, you can write a polite no. Clinics survive no. You survive a better yes.
A sample script, if your mind goes blank
“I have brown patches on both cheeks that worsen after outdoor weeks. I think it may be mixed pigment. I pigment easily. I take [medicine]. I have a [date] I cannot peel for. I want a diagnosis and a written plan. I do not want a package today. What do you see, and what would you not do?”
Then stop talking. The silence is theirs to fill with a type, a tool, a risk, a number. If they fill it with a tablet video, repeat the last two sentences.
What to photograph before you go
Face front, both sides, eyes closed, no makeup, in the bathroom you actually use. A close photo of the worst mark. A photo of the scar that moves when you smile. The ingredient list of the cream you use most. You are not being extra. You are building a file the shop cannot replace with a ring light.
If you are choosing between two rooms, take the same file to both. Compare the sentences, not the water.
Bringing a person, and how they should behave
A friend is for memory, not for shopping. Ask them to write the nouns and to stop you if you reach for a card. Ask them not to fall for the water and the lighting. If the room dislikes a witness, that is a review you did not have to search for.
What a written plan looks like
A date. A diagnosis in ordinary words. A tool with a name. A session range. A per-session price. A downtime in days. An after-hours number. A sentence about what would make them stop. If any of these is missing, ask for it. If they cannot provide it, you have the answer you came for, and it did not require a package.
If they offer to start today
You can say, “I will read this tonight.” You can say, “I have not stopped my retinoid yet.” You can say, “I need to check the register.” Starting today is convenient for a shop. It is rarely necessary for a face that has waited months. Convenience is not consent. Consent is slower, and it travels home with you.
One more question, if you have the nerve: “What would you do if this were your sister’s face, on her salary, with her calendar?” Listen to whether they still sell the same package.
After you leave, before you pay
The consult is not the purchase. The train home is. Write, while the adjectives are still warm, the diagnosis, the tool, the sessions, the downtime, and the price. If you cannot fill those five lines without calling them, you did not get a consult. You got a tour.
Sleep on it. This is not indecision. It is how adults buy things that sit on a face. A room that texts you a countdown in the evening is selling urgency, not care. Urgency is a technique. You are allowed to find it unattractive.
If two rooms disagree, that is information, not a failure. Take both plans to a third opinion or to a quiet hour with this site’s clinic method. Disagreement is cheaper before a deposit than after a bruise.

Questions people ask
- How long should a first consultation take?
- Long enough to examine the skin, take a history and answer questions. A ten-minute device tour is a sale.
- Do I have to decide the same day?
- No. A written plan and a night to think is a reasonable request.
- Should I mention medicines and pregnancy?
- Yes, even if you were not asked. The asking is part of how you judge the room.
