If you notice these growths on your penis, do not panic. They are called pearly penile papules (PPP).
Pearly penile papules are common, benign growths on the head and neck of the penis. They appear in up to 15-20% of men. They appear as flesh-coloured, smooth rounded bumps, often arranged in parallel row or concentric rings.
Sometimes, they may be mistaken for STD warts. The fact is, they are not due to an STD. They are simply prominent glands and they are generally harmless.
Do I need treatment?
PPP are harmless. There is no need for treatment unless you or your partner are concerned about the appearance.
How do I get rid of them?
PPP can be removed easily by laser treatment.
Is it safe?
Laser treatment for PPP is very safe. Complications are very rare, if any.
Is it painful?
No. However, it can be uncomfortable for some people. A numbing cream is applied to the treatment area for about 30 minutes to 1 hour before the laser treatment. We then gently laser the papules off. There is no pain at all after the procedure and you can go back to your daily activities straight away.
What happens after the treatment?
Usually 1 treatment session is enough to remove all the papules. Follow up is arranged in about 2 weeks to assess the response and to remove any remaining papules that are missed during the first session if needed. Treatment area is expected to heal completely within 1 week.
Will they come back?
It is possible but rare. We have not had patients coming back for recurrence of PPP so far.
