Tattoos have become increasingly popular in Asia in recent years. It is estimated that approximately 10%-20% of the Singapore population get some sort of tattoos at some point of their lives. As such, we are seeing a surge in requests for removal of tattoos. As many as 50% of them want to have their tattoos removed due to various reasons. However, the thought of going through the tattoo removal process may be frightening for most people.
There is good news for those who have unwanted tattoos on their bodies. You can now get your tattoos removed without going through painful surgery or dermabrasion. Tattoos can now be lightened or removed with Laser Tattoo Removal treatment.*
How does it work?
Tattoos can be treated with a specific type of advanced laser called Q-switch Nd:Yag Laser. The energy from the Laser can penetrate through the outer layer of the skin and effectively destroy the tattoo ink permanently. Your body then naturally removes the broken pigments over the next few weeks. This is when you start seeing the lightening of your tattoos. *
How effective is it?
This varies from person to person, depending on the types, colour, density, depth and age of the tattoo inks. Generally, black and blue tattoos respond very well to Laser treatment. Laser treatment can potentially achieve greater than 95% fading of the tattoo if used correctly, and if you adhere to the treatment protocol.
Is it painful?
Laser tattoo removal can be uncomfortable or painful for some. Numbing cream is usually applied 20-30 minutes before the treatment. Ice packs are also applied just prior to the treatment to minimise discomfort. If there is a huge tattoo to be lighted or removed*, treatment can be divided into sections.
How many sessions do I need?
Every tattoo is unique. The number of treatment session depends on a number of factors: location, depth, colour, density of the tattoo inks, and your skin type. It typically takes about 2-10 treatment sessions, 4-6 weeks apart, to see optimal results. The best way to gauge how many sessions may be needed is to see how the tattoo responds to the first treatment.
Will the tattoos disappear completely after Laser treatment?
Laser treatment may lighten tattoos significantly, and remove some tattoos completely.* It is important to see a doctor for a proper consultation to lay out a professional treatment regime.
Any side effects?
Laser tattoo removal can sometimes lead to hyperpigmentation (post inflammatory hyperpigmentation) or hypopigmentation of the treated area (too much lightening).
There is a small risk of skin infection a few days after laser treatment. You will be given an antiseptic cream to apply over the treated area to reduce the risk of infection. Occasionally, you may need oral antibiotics.
Temporary redness, crusting, blistering and mild bleeding may occur right after laser treatment which will disappear.
There is also a risk of scarring, especially if many treatment sessions are required.
Therefore, it is important to consult a doctor and understand the potential risks before initiating any laser tattoo treatment.*
How soon can I get back to work and daily activities?
Result may vary for individual. Most people can get back to work and their usual activities on the same day after treatment. You will be given antiseptic/healing cream to speed up the healing process and reduce risks of infection.
